A Flow Mobz “Thrill Over Fear”

“Thrill is a sudden feeling of excitement that overcomes the fear we hide internally”

The song

The music is based on an inspiration that transmits to intense feelings.
It has trap bass lines with a combination of classical and orchestral elements, while the lyrics are based on a real life experience.

The Art Approach

In Greek mythology, men were turned into stone when looking at the Medusa tricked by her manipulative and lying methods. You could see the fear in their eyes thus they were tempted and thrilled to have a quick glance at the gorgon.  In conjunction, we don’t see man transforming into stone, but the Medusa instead as she appears in the beginning, as follows making a revelation of her true form and colors in the end, when the “mask” falls and all is revealed.

“Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.”

-Mathew 10:16

Making of:

A closer “under the hood” look into the making of A Flow Mobz “Thrill Over Fear” music video visual. Showcasing some behind the scenes and highlights of the concept art, techniques & procedures used, from visual effects, animation, and texturing to R&D simulations and rendering.

The concept in basic terms is to thrive over your fears, face them and overcome them, without having the obstacles or experience change you. To stand tall and as a winner in dark times we all face. It also invokes, resembles and exposes the dark side we all carry within to battle our obstacles. In the films introduction we see a light being transcended and go beyond the range or limits of time represented by a clock, while it is set by a thunderstorm characterized as a difficult period or time.

“There is always light after darkness”
Post tenebras lux is a Latin phrase translated as Light After Darkness. It appears as Post tenebras spero lucem (“After darkness, I hope for light”) in the Vulgate version of Job 17:12
After every storm the sun will smile; for every problem there is a solution, and the soul’s indefeasible duty is to be of good cheer.
William R. Alger

“If patience is worth anything, it must endure to the end of time. And a living faith will last in the midst of the blackest storm.”
Mahatma Gandhi

Following up we see the shot of being above the clouds depicted as a “Sky High” feeling happiness riding through the dark calm storm with the construction and birth of a red rose representing the start of a human relationship based on innocence and pure love accompanied by the lyrics such wise, while it follows to the opposing black rose, representing the end or death of a human relationship and the appearance of the Egyptian Giza pyramid.
Personalizing the pyramid as we know, every pyramid has 3 sides, and also portrays trinity.
A form that involves the “3” being one entity connected which can also be found in other known biblical, mythical and even occult context as The Absolute Crown, God, One, or Father, Son & Holy Spirit.

We also have quick glances of the manipulative, lying medusa, in stone statue form indicating that she is frozen and lost in time, as we can also assume that anything in statue form is not living, breathing or has a beating heart.

Breaking down the Medusa

While in 20th Century form used by the fashion industry and depicted as the famous Versace logo medusa is known as the face of an angry woman through time. “If we take the myth of Medusa from the originating beginning stated as a “beauty” before being cursed by goddess Athena and turned into the evil-averting device known as the Gorgoneion, relating to the Perseus story which still fascinates me up to this day.”

The story of Perseus has variable motifs that are repeated in other western myths and legends including Biblical. Particularly, it is a classic tale about the journey of the hero. I think that elements esotericly and can be interpreted as a metaphor about psychospiritual transformation in which chaotic energies are harnessed and integrated into power, wisdom, and true creative force.  Cetus and Andromeda are also two aspects of the same thing—the soul in desperate need of rescue from the chaos it arises from.  It is rescued by the light of higher consciousness, represented by Perseus,

“The light in the opening shot passing through the trials and tribulations, in need of rescue from the thunderstorm thus to Thrill over the Fear.”

Breaking down the Snake

As stated in the start of the film with Mathew 10:16, “”Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.”  Amongst the ages, religions and myths, snake or serpent symbolism is one of the most widespread depicted characters of wisdom to both good and evil, fertility and rebirth, science and a lot more also in relation to both Greek and Egyptian mythology.

The approach of the snake in the film was to demonstrate that a snake only bytes when threatened and done only for protection and innocently, which is noticed as the camera pans closer to it, thus the snake making the attack in the middle of the thunderstorm.

Alone standing its ground and standing “tall” keeping instincts alive and “wise” through this journey, surrounded by an unfortunate event, “in the midst of wolves” the thunderstorm.

Once again the metaphor of “Thrill over the Fear”

Moving forward we see a close up going into the teeth of the medusa. Facing the medusa closely or metaphorically speaking coming close to the fear, fading the motion picture into the blast coming from the “heavens” space and on to the “pyramid” and the “eye of Horus” or “All Seeing Eye” is depicted.

Even though the “Eye of Horus”, or “All Seeing Eye” has a very deep meaning to explore and is adapted differently in myths, mysticism and other texts, it is without any doubt a very strong symbol that represents power and truth but at the same time secrecy.  Forwarding on we see the passing through time and space and connecting the divine powers of the “heavens” or space  with the eye that sees it all on the pyramid, a connection between the mortal to the spiritual world, some people may intrepid this scene as “as above so below” metaphor or “Let there Be Light” but I see it as peeling through the surface to see what is under, or personifying an entity (triangle, one) or an individual that is a lot different from what they appear.

Some may assume that it is a revelation of truth, showing what is under the skin, could be in good or evil terms, depending on how you look at it, I just see it as piercing through someone’s contradicting fears and uncovering or discovering their true self.  Exposing an individual and shining truth upon their secrecy. While having a connection to a higher consciousness or purpose.  This whole scene can also refer to the beginning with the biblical quote “to shine light upon darkness”, or “there is always light after darkness”

In conclusion, and coming to the end in the film we see that the Medusa breaks from the statue form, or her skin is peeled away and what lays undercover is now in the open, and her true form appears. To only find out that it is nothing more than just an angry woman, eating away the souls of men, again peeling through the surface symbolism and exposing the truth and that nothing is to be feared anymore.  With the Eye of Horus or All Seeing Eye inked on her chest. Thus the light from the beginning shot reappears, “Perseus” our hero can now walk away from this journey, bold and victorious having truth illuminated upon the “lie” the Gorgon medusa. Then again that is just one viewing angle, it does not mean or implies that one may translate this differently one could definitely say that it’s about reaching peoples full potential by giving them light.

“Anyone can find the dirt in someone, Be the one who finds the gold.” Prov. 11:27

It is important to also mention another common reference which is displayed frequently in the visual which is the mathematical “golden ratio”.  The spiral movement is shown everywhere from the clock, the creation of the rose, the pyramids, and the heavens/earth journey light beam. Another reference to that is in the trailer depicting Da Vincis’ “Vitruvian Man” which became a major source of inspiration, in executing the project.  It also represents “The creation of Life” in the beginning and ending scene.  In conjunction, the thunder, rain, clock-time-space and lighting representation can reflect to the biblical phrase:

“In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.”

At last, there are a lot of perspectives and interpretations to this story, it really depends on how one views it and their intentions or inner self conscious, that is the storys singularity and what makes it unique.  It exercizes ones mind, and that is the most important aspect for me and my art, to make people think and question. To me personally it’s about thrilling over your fears, of a dark journey into the unknown.  What’s yours?
